Wine routes

The West Coast is gaining recognition among South African wine producers, with many cellars located along the scenic route from Cape Town to Bushmans Kloof. Around Darling, estates like Cloof, Groote Post, and Darling Cellars are known for bold red wines. Farther along, wine-lovers can visit organic producer Org de Rac, coastal Fryer’s Cove, and the high-altitude vineyards of the Piekenierskloof, famous for top Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Wupperthal Mission Village

This remote mission village in the Tra-Tra Valley is a rewarding detour for adventurous travellers. A winding gravel road leads into the Cederberg and ends among the thatched roofs of this historic Moravian settlement, founded in 1830. Known for its whitewashed cottages, local coffee shops, and production of rooibos and leather veldskoene, Wupperthal is well worth a visit.

Lambert's Bay

The highlight of this West Coast fishing village is Bird Island, one of only six breeding sites worldwide for the endangered Cape Gannet. A bird-hide provides close views of Gannets, Penguins, and Cormorants, with September - peak breeding season - being ideal. Nearby, the museum details the island’s ‘guano rush,’ and harbour-side seafood restaurants offer local fare with sea views.

Cederberg Wilderness Area

Managed by CapeNature, the Cederberg Wilderness Area south of Bushmans Kloof protects 71,000 hectares of rugged mountains. Largely accessible only to hikers, it preserves stunning landscapes, rock formations, and the endemic, endangered Clanwilliam Cedar.
