Rock Art

Bushmans Kloof is a South African National Heritage Site and a sanctuary for more than 130 San rock art sites, some of which date back over 10,000 years. Set within 7,500 hectares of protected wilderness, our private reserve offers rare and respectful access to one of the world’s most significant collections of ancient rock paintings.

What makes San Rock art unique?

San rock art, painted with natural pigments onto sandstone, offers one of the world’s oldest records of Southern Africa’s earliest inhabitants. At Bushmans Kloof, these artworks remain in their original settings and depict the nomadic San people’s daily life, wildlife, and spiritual rituals, providing a vivid glimpse into an ancient culture deeply connected to the land.

Rock art experiences

Guests can discover this remarkable heritage on guided excursions led by knowledgeable experts, travelling on foot through dramatic landscapes or by shaded safari vehicle to more remote shelters. Guides interpret the meaning behind the artworks, explain how they were created, and share the cultural stories that make them so significant today.
