In the heart of the Cederberg Mountains lies a story of resilience and conservation, intertwined with the fate of a majestic species found nowhere else on Earth – the Clanwilliam cedar tree, or Widdringtonia cedarbergensis. Once covering the landscape, these iconic trees now stand as sentinels of a bygone era, their numbers drastically reduced by human activity. However, amidst the challenges, Sustainable Ceder, a not-for-profit organisation, is dedicated to the preservation of the region's fragile ecology.
Gerhard & Michelle Thom, General Managers of Bushmans Kloof
At the forefront of this noble cause stands Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, our sanctuary nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the Cederberg Mountains. Led by our passionate General Managers, Gerhard and Michelle Thom, we begin our journey to support Sustainable Cedar's mission. Together with a dedicated group of friends, scientists, and conservationists, Gerhard and Michelle will embark on a 70-kilometre hike spanning four days, traversing the northern Cederberg Mountain range.

This expedition is not merely a trek through breathtaking landscapes; it is a pilgrimage to safeguard a species on the brink of extinction. Along the way, Gerhard and Michelle will bear witness to some of the last remaining patches of adult cedars, clinging to cliffs and rocky outcrops amidst the rugged wilderness. Each step taken is a testament to their commitment to conservation, a pledge to preserve the rich biodiversity that defines this region. Central to their endeavour is the goal to raise funds for the planting of 2,000 Clanwilliam cedar trees. With each tree costing R150 to plant, the total funds aimed to be raised amount to R300,000. It's not just about planting trees; it's about sowing the seeds of hope for future generations, ensuring that the legacy of the Clanwilliam cedar endures for years to come.
Beyond the financial contributions, this initiative fosters a spirit of collaboration, uniting various stakeholders – from organisations and partners to tourists and local communities – in a shared vision for conservation. It is a call to action, inspiring individuals to become stewards of the land, guardians of its precious biodiversity. If you would like to donate to Sustainable Cedar's mission please click here.
